Designing a public building in today's time in India is a great challenge. As a developing nation, there is a large development taking place with many building and infrastructure projects. As designers, we always have a passion for creating iconic projects, at the same time we have lots of factors to consider right from the large population that the building has to cater, maintenance of public buildings, revenue generation and limited fund availability, etc. The project Baramati Bus Station was conceived with an understanding of all such factors. The brief was to design a Bus station with 22 platforms for the buses, an office for the governing authority, a workshop for buses, guest rooms, a multi-purpose hall, a bank, etc. The requirement of the commercial complex was added to the brief to create a revenue generation model that can help in achieving financial sustainability for the project. Situated in the heart of Baramati, this plot measures 28743 sq.m of area with roads on three sides of the plot. The road on the northern side of the plot is one of the main roads of the city which holds considerable potential for commercial development. The secondary road was the preferred choice for vehicular circulation of the bus as this road is comparatively less crowded. Hence two wings were developed i.e. A commercial wing on the north side and a Bus station wing on the south side. This gave an opportunity to create a large central, open-to-sky landscaped courtyard. This courtyard creates a buffer between both the wings and doubles up as a large waiting area along with a canteen activity. We believe that every built space should be in harmony with nature. Even a public building with a large number of visitors and a hustle-bustle needs such landscape zones that help the visitors and users. These breathing spaces are quite calming and soothing. The roof covers both the wings along with the platform and double-height entrance plaza at 9m height and was conceived in an organic shape. The flexibility and malleability of zinc were also very helpful in achieving the organic form of the roof. The project is designed with a unique combination of exposed brick and zinc. The iconic architectural style has added value to the urban fabric of the city. We believe in contemporary vernacular architecture, where we learn from our culture and history and apply it to architecture in the most contemporary fashion which is suitable to today’s time and age.
